Savannah's Garden City Terminal prepares to add inland rail links

THE Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) reported that the Garden City Terminal, in the Port of Savannah, managed to transport 49,115 containers by rail in August, reports UK's Railway Age.

This figure translates to 89,000 TEU, marking a six per cent increase compared to the corresponding month from the previous year.

Additionally, intermodal cargo accounted for 21.6 per cent of the total containers handled, reflecting seven per cent year-on-year increase.

"With our Mason Mega Rail Terminal fully operational, we now have the capacity to shift more of our long-haul cargo off state highways and onto rail, which both improves fuel efficiency and reduces traffic congestion," said GPA CEO Griff Lynch.

During the quarterly GPA board meeting in Savannah, Mr Lynch disclosed that GPA and CSX have collaborated to establish a seven-day-a-week rail service connecting the Port of Savannah's Mason Mega Rail Terminal with CSX's Yard in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

This direct rail service, the Carolina Connector, is projected to provide customers with a rapid three-day transit period from vessel discharge to cargo accessibility.

Given Savannah's status as a primary port of call for ocean carriers navigating the Panama Canal, cargo will be accessible at CCX even before containers are unloaded at ports farther up the coast.
